The rounded body, which it is thought took its shape from hollowed out melons or gourds that were originally used as water carriers, sits on a circular foot. The ewer has a tapered neck, and a “pleasure dome” lid with a lotus bud shaped finial. The curved handle has two makaras (aquatic mythological animals), one at the top, and thinner one curled at the base. The 'S' shaped spout has another makara at the terminal.
“One of the most characteristic objects of daily life throughout the Islamic world is the ewer…”, says author Mark Zebrowski. Furthermore “in the hot climates of India and the middle east, this water bearing vessel had great importance” both for religious as well as utilitarian purposes and appears often in miniatures, art and architecture. In Deccan and Mughal culture, it is thought that ewers would have been used to pour scented water for guest to wash their hands. The ewer is generally thought to have evolved in Iran and spread to India, but Zebrowski feels there is some evidence that this may have been the other way round. He cites an earlier dated example found in a temple from 1415.

This is a brass Veerabhadra shield from North Karnataka/Maharashtra, which would have been used in ritual dances. Veerabhadra the warrior, also known as Veerabathira or Veerabathiran, is a fierce and fearsome form of Shiva. He holds in his four hands a Bana (arrow), Khadga (sword), Dhanusha (bow), and Khetaka (shield). Above him at the apex of the arched prabhavali is the protective face of a yali. To the right of the Yali is Nandi, Shiva's vahana, and to the left a lingam. At the base of the shield on the left is Daksha Prajapathi, and on the right is his consort the goddess Parvati. The size mentioned is with the base stand.

This is an elaborate kindi/ewer from Karnataka with an elephant’s head as the spout. The ewer is made of both copper and brass using a cast and repousse technique. The kindi has two rings on the top so it could be carried with a chain or rope, and on one side is a brass repousse representation of Lakshmi. On the other end of the ewer to the spout is a brass finial in the shape of a lotus bud. This kind of ewer was used for dispensing water in religious settings and is from the Mysore region. The cap at the top has at some point been lost to time.

This is an unusual, brass Nandi inkwell on wheels from North Karnataka. The Nandi detailing includes numerous processional ornaments including chains of bells and other decorations. The cap of the inkwell is a shiva lingam that slides back in order to fill the ink. Nandi is the sacred bull calf, gatekeeper, and vehicle (vahana) of the God Shiva.

These are wooden, hand-carved, Marapachi dolls from Andhra Pradesh. These were traditionally displayed during the Golu festival in South India as part of Navaratri celebrations. Marapachi are presented in the home on tier shelves, and friends and neighbours invited to visit to view the displays. These dolls come in pairs, usually a man and a woman, and the children of the house dress them up at festival time.

This large, Bhuta, cast bronze boar, Panjurli, is from Coastal Karnataka. Panjurli is the divine spirit of a wild boar worshipped as a part of the Bhuta Kola. Metal boars such as this are used as part of annual ceremonies (still practiced today) called Kola to invoke demigods and spirits in the Tulu region of Karnataka in Southern India. These last several evenings and involves the use of ritual objects such as a headdress, as well as a face mask, ornaments, and offerings. Panjurli in Tulu means a wild boar offspring and is worshipped because many wild boars used to destroy crops and so farmers started worshipping the spirits of wild boars to protect them.

This is a pair of rare Deccan, brass Nandi palki (palanquin) finials. Palanquin, or “palki”, are litter-type conveyances that have been in use in India for centuries. These striking finials would have adorned the pole end that were used to support and carry the compartment or the deity in processions from Shavaite monasteries.
The two pieces measure 12.5 (H) x 16.5 (W) x 7 (D) inches and 11.5 (H) x 16 (W) x 7 (D) inches.

This is a large, brass Kirtimukha (face of glory) from Karnataka, which would probably have once sat at the apex of a prabhavali. The story of Kirtimukha begins with King Jalandhara, who, by virtue of extraordinary austerities, accumulated to himself irresistible powers. In a burst of pride, he sent forth his messenger - the monster Rahu - to challenge Shiva to give up his bride Parvati. Shiva's immediate answer was to explode a tremendous burst of power from his third eye, which created a horrendous, emaciated, ravenous lion. A terrified Rahu sought Shiva's mercy, which Shiva eventually agreed to. But how then were they to feed the ravenous demon lion? Shiva suggested that the monster should feed on itself. So Kirtimukha willingly ate his body starting with its tail as per Lord Shiva's order, stopping only when his face remained. Shiva, who was so pleased with the result, gave it the name 'Face of Glory' and declared that it should always be at the door of his temples.

On the right-hand side at the base is also a trishul (trident) the symbol of Shiva, and on the left is a small hand drum, or damaru, which Shiva uses to drum the beat of his dance of creation and destruction. Behind the binding band, which runs across the prabhavali, are circular holders which would have been used to stand brass flags with different religious symbols.

This is a pair of beautiful brass, repousse dwarapalikas (female guardians) from Karnataka. Dwarapalikas are guardians of the gate or threshold and are placed at the entrance of temples, shrines or sacred precincts dedicated to goddesses. They carry in their hands the emblem of the deity enshrined in the sanctuary, in this case a trishul (trident) which symbolizes Ma Shakti, or Durga in their upper right hand. In the lower right hand, they have a protective weapon (mace) and in the upper left hand they hold a serpent. Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.

This is a pair of lost wax, bronze anklets worn by priests and dancers especially in North Karnataka. The anklets are hollow and encase pellets that rattle when the anklet is moved. Each is cast with four circular symbols perhaps representing the sun. The anklets have been displayed on a custom-made stand, and the size mentioned is with the stand.
The ancient art of lost-wax casting dates back nearly 6000 years in India, and the oldest example in the world is from the Indus Valley Civilization. First, an artist creates an original model from wax. Everything is then encased with layers of clay, thus becoming a mould for the molten metal that will be poured inside it. When this is poured in, the wax melts and the original is lost. Once the metal hardens, the outer layer of clay is smashed, which is what makes each piece unique.
