Deep in the lush hills of Meghalaya, black pottery is practiced solely by a community of gifted women, who channel ancient wisdom and the spirit of the forest into creating intricate vessels from clay. Breaking away from the usual practice of sitting at the wheel by potters, our craftswomen practice a unique method of standing over a form until it takes its desired shape. Further, shattering all artistic barriers, these craftswomen only use homegrown wheels and self-made wooden tools to shape every creation with their bare hands.

\n\n

- Our craftswomen mold and handshape the clay prepared in advance.

- The shape is then fired in a bhatti, an open furnace, using local fuel.

- While the shape is hot, it is dipped into a milky solution of the bark of the Sohlia tree and cold water, this lends it its blackish color.

- Sometimes the solution shades the pieces in different tints of red, brown or black, which is completely natural.

- After being treated with the solution, the shape is then dried under the sun for 2-3 days

\n\n

DO:

- Use cooking utensils on a low flame with a heat diffuser below, to prevent cracking.

- Before first use, soak the cooking utensils in water for an hour and give them adequate time to dry. Once the utensil dries, coat it with olive oil. Then proceed to fill it up to three-quarters with water and heat it for at least an hour on low flame, on a stove with a heat diffuser on. Note that this is only to be done once, before first use.

- Clean your vessels immediately after you use them.

- Soak a soft sponge in tepid water, apply mild detergent and gently rub your vessel clean.

- Give your vessels enough time to dry, this helps to retain their natural finish.

- Be careful while using, since all tableware is susceptible to abrasion from repeated handling.

- Make sure to put a cushion of tissue/cloth between each product while stacking.

- These vessels are microwave safe, so you can heat conveniently yet eat traditionally.

- Note that vessels for liquids can only be used for water, black coffee or black tea.

DON'T:

- Stack a lot of dishes in the sink while washing.

- Use a stainless steel/metal scrubber to clean.

- Use a dishwasher to rinse or wash these products.

- Store food in these products.

India was a forerunner in trade-in hand-printed textiles during the 18th and 19th century. However, with the advent of Industrialization, this craft began to slowly perish. But we are determined to keep providing sustainable livelihoods to many local families, who have inherited the rare skill of performing this versatile art form. Where every design is unique to the utility of the fabric. Moreover, this art form is practised using only natural dyes, to protect the local ecology. Emotionally, Lila's delicate floral prints, in faded shades, inspire in us a feeling of nostalgia for simpler, greener times.

- What makes this technique unique is the fact that the design has to be first carved onto the wooden block by hand, and then executed on the fabric.

- While factory-printed textiles are often cheaper and perhaps more colorfast, hand-printed textiles have an unmatched soul, richness of color, depth and artistic appeal.

- At first, the blocks are carved from wood using a hammer and chisel. Where each block has a wooden handle and 2-3 cylindrical holes drilled into it, to allow free air passage and the release of excessive printing paste.

- Then the fabric is dyed and washed if needed.

- After that, the fabric is stretched over the printing table and fastened with small pins. This is an important stage in the process, where the artists need to make sure there is uniform tension in the fabric with no ripples.

- The printing starts from left to right. The color is evened out in the tray with a wedge of wood. Then the block is dipped into an outline color, which is usually black or any dark color.

- When the block is applied to the fabric, the artist slams it hard with his bare fist, so that a complete impression of the design is registered on the cloth.

- If it is a multiple color design, the second printer dips his block in color again and prints on top of the outline made by the first block. A third color, if required, is applied similarly.

- Our artists have mastered the skill of precisely aligning the block on each application, ensuring that all colors beautifully dovetail into the design and form a coherent whole.

DO:

- Wash each piece of fabric separately.

- Make sure to use a laundry bag while washing.

- Make sure to iron the fabric inside out.

DON'T:

- Tumble dry the fabric in the washing machine.

- Use any form of bleach or a harsh fabric cleaner.

Clay, a natural material, is used to make ceramic wares. It is kneaded and then thrown on a pottery wheel, where it is shaped by hand into this product. The clay product then goes through the process of bisque firing, glaze application, drying, and then glaze firing to make the final ceramic product.

Pottery in the Indian subcontinent has a long history — it has existed as a craft form for centuries. Evidence of earthenware has been found in the early settlements of Lahuradewa and later during the Indus Valley Civilization. Recent times have seen pottery taking on modern design sensibilities, aided by artists and potters that are breathing new life into the craft form. Studio pottery in India is said to have been started by Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. It further branched out into two styles, which developed in Delhi under Gurcharan Singh and in Pondicherry under Ray Meeker’s Golden Bridge Pottery.

Originating in first-millennium BC, the archaeological evidence of this craft was first found in the form of glass beads at Maski, a Chalcolithic site in the southern Deccan. After that, more than thirty archaeological sites in different regions of India have produced glass objects in different colors and forms such as bangles, ear-reels, eye-beads, tiles or fragmented vessels. Presently, in the bustling town of Firozabad in India, our craftsmen follow centuries-old glass blowing traditions to create this glassware. - First, molten glass is inflated with a blowpipe to form a glass bubble, which gives it a bulbous shape. Each piece is mouth-blown individually by our craftsmen.

- Then each piece of inflated glass is moulded into a shape according to its utility.

- All our shapes are largely inspired by traditional Indian utensils. Which is why this glassware is also well-known as Indian Hand Blown Glass.

- Also, it's interesting to know that, in keeping with the other forms of the Deva collection, our shapes have been kept very simple so they can complement other materials as well.

\n\n

DO:

- To remove visibly accumulated dust or fingerprints, you can hand-clean the glassware using store bought glass cleaning products. First, flood the glass surface with a spray-on cleaning solution or use a cloth saturated with the cleaning solution, then gently rub the glassware clean.

- Once the cleaning is done, wipe the wet surface with a clean, lint-free towel or cloth.

- Now wipe the glassware completely dry with another, lint-free towel or cloth.

- However, while wiping the glass dry, make sure to stop when it's almost dry, leaving a uniform film on the glass surface. This helps prevent streaking.

DON'T:

- Stack the glassware with other vessels.

- Use a harsh stainless steel/metal scrubber to clean.

Amethyst, a violet variety of Quartz, was considered to be one of the most cardinal gems of the old world. Its name is derived from the ancient Greek word amethystos meaning not drunken. Interestingly, the ancient Greeks actually believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication which is why wine goblets were specially carved from it. Later medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in the battlefield, due to a prevalent belief that this gem calms the nerves. Inspired by such riveting tales from the past, our artists from Agra create amaranthine barware that induces in us a feeling of sitting for a drink in a boisterous tavern in medieval Greece.

- Traditionally carved by artists for Jaipur, this stone is considered to be very hard to work on.
- Moreover, amethyst has a high rate of cracking due to a Mohs hardness level of a low seven, which makes it even more complex for our artists to work on our collection.
- Yet each piece of amethyst in our collection has been painstakingly carved by hand.
- And in the end, craftsmen use the age-old hardstone carving technique of drilling to give each piece a smooth and fine finish.

- This metalware is created using brass, an alloy of zinc and copper, clay, resign, borax and sand.

- The process of creating our metalware is complex, where each production cycle involves melting, casting, joining, scraping, engraving and polishing, and can take between four to six weeks.

- Our artisans first cast and mould the clay from a mixture of sand, resin and oil, mixed in the perfect proportions.

- Then they add borax to this mix to prevent the metal from sticking.
